Congratulations to Stuart Gosling who received a Silver ACS Award for cinematography work on the film clip Mr. Mysterious.
Stuart Gosling, a UK post production supervisor and director now based in Melbourne, directed this clip which is his third for Amorosi.
Gosling, now working as a Production Consultant for Digital Pictures, was listed by Promo News as one of the UK’s most prolific music video directors in 2008.
He has worked with some of the who’s who of music including the Backstreet Boys, Seal, Nelly Furtado and Rohnan Keating. After working with Gosling on Kiss your Mama and Perfect Vanessa and her team approached Stuart seeking a more futuristic, VFX execution for Mr. Mysterious.
Stuart had been developing a visual style coined as “motion cubism” which he successfully pitched to Amorosi and her team.
In Stuart’s words motion cubism "is based on Picasso’s Cubist period. It follows the the visual theory of simultaneously capturing an object from different angles using motion pictures”. Stuart also noted that this FX has great potential in 3D and as such has plans to take it to the next level using stereoscopic techniques.
This stylised piece integrated many services offered by the Melbourne based post production group from event production services to post production and VFX design. The film clip was shot in one day with a total of 10 Red cameras. Vanessa was scanned from various angles and set ups as she performed the song.
In this process over three terabytes of 4K data was captured and encoded for editing. Considering the average feature film uses three to four terabytes of data, this was no mean feat! These files then had to be synched and nested in FCP so the offline edit could begin.
Digital Pictures’ Chris Dea handled this complicated process and his skills as both an offline editor and online editor were crucial to the success of the project.
Since the motion cubist effect is not really apparent until composited into 3D space the offline edit was used to create place-holders for certain angles. Much of the creative work, the composition of the cubist images and virtual camera effects were done in After FX.
The final effect is both mesmerizing and truly unique and as well as recieving the ACS Award was voted by the Australian public as one of their favourite film clips of 2010.
Stuart would like to thank everyone at Digital Pictures who assisted him in completing this award winning project, with special mention to Thomas Pullar, Chris Frey, Simon Bronson and Stephen Van Elst for their long hours and dedication.
